Rouse Confronts Challenging Task As Brand New White House Chief Of Staff

Pete Rouse, a longtime Obama confidante, will step in for the departing Rahm Emanuel as White House chief of staff. Referred to as a level-headed pragmatist with a knack for defusing turmoil, Rouse is a stark contrast to the mercurial Emanuel, whose reputation for political brawling can be useful within the race for mayor of Chicago. The consensus in political circles is that Rouse has taken on what could be an unrewarding headache for the remainder of Obama’s term if Republicans come out ahead in the November elections.

Pete Rouse is considered the ‘anti-Rahm’ by many

Pete Rouse was introduced by President Obama as a “skillful problem solver” when his appointment as interim White House chief of staff was declared Friday. Rouse has evidently influenced decisions in the White House although nobody knew he even existed, reports Sheryl Gay Stohlberg of the New York Times. Stohlberg wrote that “Rouse is the anti-Rahm.” Emanuel liked everyone knowing that he was good and doing good for the country. Rouse, on the other hand, is more reserved and does things nobody notices. Previous Senate Democratic leader Tom Daschle had Rouse on his chief of staff previously. Right before this job, Rouse was in charge of Obama’s senatorial office. He is supposedly very close to the president as he was a senior advisor to Obama within the White House also.

Toughest job in government

Pete Rouse has a hard act to follow as he fills Emanuel’s shoes. The difficult political climate the White House is facing had Dana Milbank of the Washington Post saying Rouse had “the worst week in Washington” even before his appointment was made official. Milbank wrote that Rouse is “stepping into the toughest job in govt at one of the most difficult times imaginable.” In the November elections, Democrats seem destined to lose a variety of seats. Obama is going to have a very tough time getting things rolling for the next two years.

Be warned the wrath of Palin

Pete Rouse is already drawing the wrath of Sarah Palin. As soon as the rumor of Rouse replacing Emanuel came up, Palin starting tweeting all sorts of innuendo, reports CNN. CNN reports that Palin said Rouse maintained his voter registration in Alaska so he could collect the state’s yearly dividend. But Rouse’s name doesn’t appear on the Alaska Permanent Fund dividend records. Palin’s accusations were called “fairly silly,” by Robert Gibbs, White House Press Secretary. I read this here:
